Unrest following presidential elections continues
15 Jun 2009
Unrest related to the controversial and disputed 12 June presidential election continues to occur; protests and clashes have been primarily concentrated in Tehran, and authorities have banned rallies in an effort to restore order to the streets. Although reformist candidate Hossein Mousavi cancelled a protest that was to be held on 15 June, several hundred of his supporters gathered in downtown Tehran, where they clashed with supporters of incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. There may be a decline in protests, as reports indicate that plain-clothed security personnel have been deployed and are now authorised to use live ammunition to disperse demonstrators. Some reports indicate that despite the 15 June clashes and ongoing unrest, some sense of normalcy has returned to central Tehran and many businesses and shops are open.
