Taban Air Plane Crash-Lands and Overshoots Runway
25 Jan 2010
On 24 January 2010 a passenger aircraft operated by Taban Air crash-landed and overshot the runway while making an emergency landing at Mashhad International Airport (OIMM/MHD). The Tupolev 154 aircraft caught fire during the landing, losing its undercarriage and a wing; the rear end of the aircraft also broke away. The aircraft was carrying approximately 170 people, including crew; 46 people sustained injuries, but there were no fatalities.
The flight originally left the city of Abadan in southwestern Iran on 23 January, but bad weather forced the aircraft to land in Isfahan. After leaving Isfahan on 24 January, a passenger’s health problems forced an emergency landing in Mashhad. Aviation authorities have not given any indications as to what may have caused the mishap.
