Timika airport was temporarily closed following bomb detonation
15 Sep 2008
On 14 September 2008 a small explosive device detonated at an electricity power distribution unit near an airport in Timika, Papua province. The device exploded approximately 165 yd/150 m from the runway at Moses Kilangin International Airport (WABP/TIM) and caused no casualties. The airport was closed following the attack, but has since resumed operations, although under tight security. Security checks have been increased on the road to the airport and at the airport’s Sheraton Hotel. While there has been no claim of responsibility for the attack, a little known separatist group called the West Papua National Army has increased its activity in the region. It is not known whether the device was related to similar mortar attacks against a multi-national mining company with operations in the area on 11 and 12 September.
