Tidal wave hits North Jakarta
10 Feb 2009
A tidal wave hit North Jakarta on 10 February 2009, forcing residents to flee their homes. The wave, which destroyed approximately 37 houses in Marunda and Kalibaru, was the second large wave since the beginning of 2009, the first of which hit the same area in January, damaging 77 houses. Although water and wave damage are common for this time of year, the level and ferocity of the recent tidal waves was due to the erosion of a nearby embankment.
