REGION HIT BY TWO FUTHER EARTHQUAKES

On 16 October 2009 an earthquake with an initial magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale struck northeast of Sulawesi, Indonesia, at approximately 0230 local time. The earthquake’s epicentre was located approximately 135 mi/216 km northeast of Baubau at a depth of 6 mi/10 km. There were no immediate reports of damage, and no tsunami warning was issued.
Later on 16 October another earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.5, occurred south of Sumatra and west of the capital city of Jakarta at approximately 1650 local time (0950 UTC). The quake’s centre was located approximately 80 mi/125 km south of Telukbetung and 110 mi/180 km west of Jakarta at a depth of 33 mi/53 km. The earthquake was felt in Jakarta, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and no tsunami warning was issued.
