EARTHQUAKE STRIKES WEST OF SUMATRA

On 16 August 2009 an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck near the western coast of Sumatra. The undersea quake occurred at 1438 local time at a depth of approximately 30 mi/50 km. It was centred approximately 70 mi/110 km west southwest of Padang. No tsunami warning was issued. After the quake, at least three aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.2, 5.5 and 5.6, respectively, were reported near the initial epicentre. No tsunami warning was issued after the quakes.
