Thousands of demonstrators protest against the closing of Tata Motors in Singur

On 4 October 2008 thousands of demonstrators protested against the closing of Tata Motors in Singur, West Bengal. Protesters blocked traffic and dug up roads so that thousands of trucks leaving the plant were left stranded. Tata Motors decided to close the plant on 3 October due to protests that turned violent because of the construction of the plant. Now, those residents who have already sold their land to Tata Motors for construction of the plant want the company to continue building; however, Tata Group's chairman stated that there is no possibility that the plant will reopen.
