Strikes held across central India

Strikes occurred across central India on 3 July 2008 in response to the decision by the Kashmiri state government to withdraw its donation of land for a Hindu religious trust. Violent demonstrations were reported in the state of Madhya Pradesh where two people were killed in clashes between Hindu and Muslim protesters in Indore. Police officers used tear gas rounds to disperse the crowd. Other protests were reported in Bihar and in Gujarat. In Hyderabad, approximately 100 protesters were arrested, but no violence was reported. In Mumbai, protesters blocked off a highway to the domestic terminal at Mumbai Airport (BOM/VABB) and dispersed after a half hour.
