Strike closes down shops, markets, schools and public transport in Assam state

On 3 November 2008 a strike closed down shops, markets, schools and public transport in Assam state. The All Assam Students Union (AASU) organized the 11-hour strike to protest the government's inability to protect the state against terrorism. Protesters blame the government for not enhancing border security to prevent Bangladeshis from entering the country illegally. The strike occurred as a result of the 30 October coordinated bombings in Assam, for which suspicion has fallen on militants from Bangladesh.
