Stampede at a Hindu temple claimed the lives of at least 147 people
30 Sep 2008
A stampede at a Hindu temple claimed the lives of at least 147 people and injured more than 150 others on 30 September 2008. Reports indicate that the fatality count may rise. Approximately 25,000 worshipers had gathered at the temple situated in the western city of Jodhpur, located in the northwestern state of Rajasthan, for a Hindu festival. This is the fourth stampede at temples in India this year alone, resulting from poor crowd control at many temples. While localized protests over the handling of the crowd at the temple and the authorities' response to the stampede may occur, wider disruptions and demonstrations related to this incident are not expected.
