Security increased across the country for Republic Day

26 Jan 2009
On 25 January 2009 Indian officials reported that they will enhance security in all 28 states in anticipation of Republic Day on 26 January. The government received intelligence reports that warned of possible militant attacks within the country, particularly in locations where major Republic Day events will take place. A gun battle between Uttar Pradesh police officers and two suspected terrorists in the suburb of Noida on the evening of 25 January increased authorities' concerns of a terrorist threat. Police officers shot and killed the two men after a car chase in Noida, which is located 12 mi/20 km from New Delhi. After an inspection of the individuals’ vehicle, police officers found two AK-47s, five hand grenades, detonators and Pakistani passports. In New Delhi 20,000 troops will be deployed for the traditional military parade. Anti-aircraft guns, snipers, fighter jets and gunships will also be in place to prevent airborne attacks. Authorities have also increased electronic surveillance of the area. Security will be heightened at religious sites, markets, intersections, borders and railway stations. In the state of Uttar Pradesh, security forces will perform checks at hotels, food stalls, markets, theaters, railway stations and bus stations. Train services in Kashmir will be halted for the day on 26 January.
