12 Aug 2008
According to reports published on 12 August 2008, security forces in India's Kashmir region opened fire on a Muslim protest, causing several fatalities. Sources indicate that at least 10 people were killed when Indian police opened fire with live ammunition. Thousands of demonstrators violated a curfew, set in place to deter violence during the burial ceremonies of a Kashmiri separatist leader who died in earlier protests. Protests have been taking place in Kashmir for several weeks, increasing Hindu-Muslim tensions in India.
