Republic Day Celibrations Commence

Republic Day celebrations commenced across India on 26 January 2010 as increased security measures were implemented at key locations throughout the country. The holiday marks the anniversary of the end of British rule and the adoption of the Indian Constitution. Large military marches and public celebrations were staged in many cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru. Security measures were especially tight in New Delhi, where President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh presided over a parade along the Rajpath ceremonial boulevard from Raisina Hill.
