Protesters attack police in Srinagar

Protesters threw stones and sticks at police officers in Kashmir's summer capital of Srinagar on 7 September 2008 during a demonstration against the Indian government. Reports indicate that the situation became violent after a protester was killed on 6 September when police officers used rubber bullets and tear gas to quell the demonstration; several people were injured when police officers used tear gas and batons to disperse the protesters. The demonstrations have been ongoing since early August 2008. They began after the Indian government announced plans to allocate land in Kashmir to a planned Hindu temple.
