Police raid a suspected militant hideout in Jamia Nagar
19 Sep 2008
Police officers raided a suspected militant hideout in Jamia Nagar, which is located in a southern area of New Delhi, at 1100 local time on 19 September 2008. Police officers engaged in a brief shootout with a handful of suspected Islamic militants after receiving an anonymous phone call. Police officers apprehended the suspected leader of the Indian Mujahidden, a terrorist group that has claimed responsibility for coordinated bombings in several cities, including Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Bangaluru and, most recently, New Delhi. At least two suspected militants were killed in the incident.
The operation comes a day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced plans to reform India’s security services and intelligence community to respond to the growing threat of home-grown militancy. The Indian Cabinet approved a measure to hire 7,000 additional police officers in New Delhi and put more security cameras in busy areas around the city.
