New Delhi sairport shuts temporarily following gunshots
05 Dec 2008
Authorities shut down New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (VIDP/DEL) for approximately 20 minutes beginning at 0125 local time on 5 December 2008 after receiving reports of two gunshot sounds near the arrival area of the international terminal. The incident delayed several flights. Police officials have not yet found any evidence substantiating reports of a shooting. Initial media reports indicated that security forces had shot six gunmen. Authorities have increased security at airports across India -- including Indira Gandhi International Airport -- in recent days after an e-mail warned of a terrorist attack that would coincide with the anniversary of the destruction of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya on 6 December.
