Muslim protesters march through the city of Srinagar in the Kashmir region

22 Aug 2008
On 22 August 2008 tens of thousands of Muslim protesters marched through the city of Srinagar in the Kashmir region in support for Kashmiri separatism. Police officers were reportedly stationed near the protest, although there were no reports of any significant violence or arrests. Organizers stated the march was planned in response to dispute with government officials in New Delhi over disputed land claimed by both Hindus and Muslims. Kashmir is India's only majority Muslim state and the recent dispute has boosted separatist movements that want Kashmir to break away from Indian control. Several violent protests have been staged since the dispute began in early August and separatist Muslims are reportedly planning further demonstrations. Friday's protest was the largest demonstration in support of Kashmiri Separatism in several years. The recent developments have also raised tensions between Pakistan and India as both countries claim sovereignty over the entire Kashmir region.
