Market bombs - Update

30 Oct 2008
On 30 October 2008 at least 12 bombs and at least one hand grenade exploded within minutes of each other in Assam state. The majority of the explosions occurred at several market places in Guwahati. The largest blast occurred only a few hundred yards from the office of the state's chief minister. Six bombs exploded in the Barpeta and Kokrajhar districts. A high security zone and the houses of several senior police officials were also targeted. The United Liberation Front of Asom is the main suspect; however, no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. At least 50 people were killed, and 300 more were wounded. In the meantime, police officers have started to search for more bombs. A number of people protested against the blasts in the streets of Guwahati. They threw stones at cars and set at least two fire engines ablaze. Authorities imposed a curfew and closed all roads leading to and from the area.
