Maoist rebels begin 48-hour strike

The Indian government today issued an alert for the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Orissa as Maoist rebels began a 48-hour strike in those regions. The rebels called the strike to protest an incident in the Lalgarh region of West Bengal on 18 June in which security forces stormed a rally in the village of Pirakata.
