17 Nov 2008
On 15 November 2008 local sources reported that Kolkata is at risk of a terrorist attack by the Bangladesh-based Harkat-ul Jihadi Islami (HuJI) militant group. Intelligence officials in Assam state warned that the militants planned to travel to Kolkata from Bangladesh to carry out an attack between 15 and 30 November.
As a result of the alert, more police officers are patrolling the streets, and security has been increased at Howrah, Sealdah and other railway stations. Officers have also been deployed to malls and parking lots in the area, and Siliguri police officers are patrolling bus terminals and shopping centres.
