GUNMAN OPENS FIRE IN RAILWAY STATION

25 Aug 2009
On 25 August 2009 a man armed with a gun opened fire at the Ludhiana Railway Station in the city of Ludhiana, which is located approximately 60 mi/100 km from Chandigarh in Punjab state. The incident occurred shortly after the man arrived from Pune on the Jhelum Express train. The man fired several shots after two police officers attempted to search his bag. The ensuing gun battle, which lasted approximately one hour, left one person dead and two police officers wounded. Authorities suspect that the man may have ties to a Sikh militant group, but do not believe that the attack was premeditated.
