Airport Authority Employees Union threaten 48-hour nationwide strike

The Airport Authority Employees Union has threatened to launch a 48-hour nationwide strike beginning at midnight local time on 30 April 2009. The strike is being organised over the privatisation of airports in India and the forced transfer of several thousand workers from Delhi International Airport Pvt. Ltd to Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Ltd (the companies run each respective airport). Approximately 15,000 union members of are expected to participate, and the action could cause significant transport disruptions. The union has threatened to extend the action indefinitely if the Airport Authority of India does not concede to its demands.
