3 separate bomb explosions in city in Assam state
02 Jan 2009
Three separate bombs went off at locations throughout the city of Guwahati in Assam state in eastern India on 1 January 2009. Authorities stated that at least five people were killed and 50 others injured when bombs exploded at two crowded marketplaces. A third bomb was detonated alongside a main roadway through the city. Investigators told reporters that they believe militants from the United Liberation Front of Asom guerrilla group planted the improvised explosive devices, which were attached to bicycles. The explosions occurred while Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram was in Assam on an official visit to review security conditions in the troubled state. Security officials stated that the roadside bomb was placed along a route that Chidambaram's motorcade was to travel later in the day.
