17 low-intensity bombs exploded in Ahmedabad, located in the state of Gujarat

28 Jul 2008
On 26 July 2008 a total of 17 low-intensity bombs exploded in the western city of Ahmedabad, located in the state of Gujarat. The coordinated attacks began at approximately 1830 local time (1400 UTC) and ended at approximately 1930 (1500 UTC). The bombings killed 49 people, and approximately 160 others were injured. The explosions reportedly occurred in several areas, including Maninagar, Sarkhej, Isanpur, Bapunagar, Hatkeshwar, Naroda, Payiya, Thakkar Nagar, Odhave, Narol, Sanagpur and Jawahar Chowk. The first series of explosions took place in a busy market, and the second series occurred near a hospital, which resulted in several fatalities. In addition to the hospital, a bus, bus stop and railway station were targeted. All explosions reportedly occurred within a 6 mi/10 km radius in Ahmedabad. The Indian Mujahideen, a relatively unknown terrorist group, claimed responsibility for the attacks on Ahmedabad. Reports indicate that the group had sent an e-mail to multiple news stations warning them that terror would strike the city within minutes. This domestic terrorist group had previously claimed responsibility for the Jaipur bombings in May 2008. It did not reference or claim responsibility for the bombings that happened one day earlier in Bengaluru (see the story below for an update on this incident).
