145 killed and 300 injured in stampede
04 Aug 2008
On 3 August 2008 a stampede occurred at a popular Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh's Bilaspur district at approximately 1045 local time (0515 UTC). Thousands had gathered at the temple to attend the 10-day Sharavan Ashtami fair that began on 2 August. The temple is located approximately 200 mi/320 km north of New Delhi, the capital. The stampede evidently occurred following rumors of a landslide; a railing outside the temple subsequently collapsed, causing many pilgrims to fall into a ravine. Media sources put the death toll at approximately 145 people and estimate that the number of injured has risen to more than 300, most of them being women and children. Relief workers have been dispatched to the site, and teams of doctors have also come to offer assistance.
