Demonstrations were held in Reykjavik, the capital, and other cities on 25 October 2008 in response to the country’s recent economic crisis. In Reykjavik, approximately 2,000 protesters demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Geir Haarde and Iceland's central bank chief, as well as the launching of the process for Iceland to join the European Union. The protest involved a march from Austurvöllur Square near the Parliament building to the Rádherrabústadurinn on Tjarnargata Street, which is the former residence of the prime minister. During the action, participants burned a Landsbanki Bank flag at Austurvöllur Square. A second demonstration took place at Austurvöllur Square. Demonstrations also took place in various other cities, including Akureyri and Seydisfjördur.
