Travellers should anticipate possible transportation disruptions throughout Honduras

Transportation workers launched a nationwide strike on 21 July 2008 to demand that the government allow them to increase fares to offset rising fuel costs. The workers used trucks and buses to block traffic in San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa before police officers forced them to vacate. Police officers fired tear gas to prevent striking workers from blocking roads leading to Ramon Villeda Morales International Airport (MHLM/SAP) in San Pedro Sula. Negotiations that took place between the workers and the government in the evening of 21 July failed to yield an agreement. The workers plan to continue the strike on 22 July. Travellers should anticipate possible transportation disruptions throughout Honduras on 22 July. Although demonstrations will likely be peaceful, isolated confrontations between protesters and police officers are probable.
