TONCONTIN AIRPORT RE-OPENED

08 Jul 2009
Authorities have reopened Toncontin International Airport; after having closed the airport on 6 July after deposed President Manuel Zelaya attempted to land at the facility and thousands of his supporters clashed with security forces the day before. The reopening came after thousands of passengers overwhelmed other domestic and international airports, especially San Pedro Sula's Ramon Villeda Morales Airport. Military personnel continue to impose strict security protocols at Toncontin Airport in order to thwart potential attacks by Zelaya supporters. Security personnel review all persons who enter the terminal, while police officers and soldiers patrol the perimeter of the facility.
