STALL IN POLITICAL NEGOTIATIONS COULD LEAD TO FURTHER PROTESTS

19 Oct 2009
Negotiations to end Honduras' political crisis have stalled today. Interim President Roberto Micheletti has thus far refused to reinstate ousted President Manuel Zelaya, claiming that only the Supreme Court has the power to restore ousted presidents to power, according to the Honduran Constitution. Zelaya has been calling on Congress to reinstate him. Despite the current deadlock and indications that neither side is willing to make significant concessions, Zelaya extended the deadline to reach an agreement until 19 October. After that date, a representative for the ousted leader claims that negotiations will be formally broken. According to a delegate for the de facto government, Micheletti will participate in negotiations until a resolution is reached.
