CURFEW LIFTED IN HONDURAS

13 Jul 2009
On 13 July 2009 the overnight curfew that has been in effect in Honduras for the past two weeks was lifted. The curfew was imposed by interim President Roberto Micheletti's government shortly after the ousting of Manuel Zelaya. The situation across the country and in Tegucigalpa, the capital, remained calm. Micheletti has continued to resist international pressure to allow Zelaya to return to office, though he has stated that he would consider amnesty for the deposed leader. Micheletti also stated that the elections scheduled for November could be held earlier. Thus far, attempts at a resolution to the political crisis have failed. Although both Micheletti and Zelaya agreed to continue talks via a mediator, there were no scheduled meetings as of 13 July.
