CURFEW EXTENDED FOLLOWING RETURN OF TOPPLED LEADER

22 Sep 2009
Manuel Zelaya the President of Honduras, who was toppled in a coup almost three months ago, has made a dramatic return to the country and has taken refuge in the Brazilian embassy in the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa. His sudden appearance has increased pressure on the country's ruler Roberto Micheletti to hand over power and increased the chance of violent protests or a stand-off at the embassy. The country's interim government ordered a curfew immediately after Mr Zelaya's return, but thousands of his supporters ignored the ruling and remained outside the embassy, dancing and cheering. In a bid to calm the response, the curfew was extended from 15 to 26 hours and flights to Tegucigalpa were suspended
