CURFEW & AIRPORT CLOSURE UPDATE
23 Sep 2009
Just several hours after ousted President Manuel Zelaya announced via radio broadcast that he had secretly returned to Honduras to initiate dialogue for his return to power, the interim Honduran government announced the indefinite suspension of all inbound and outbound flights at all of the country's airports.Government officials also stated that the ongoing curfew, which was originally scheduled to end at 0700 local time on 22 September, has been extended for a total of 26 hours and will cover the daylight hours on 22 September. Zelaya has taken refuge in the Brazilian Embassy, located in the Palmira de Tegucigalpa neighbourhood. At approximately 0400 local time security forces moved in to disperse Zelaya supporters who had assembled at the site. Clashes occurred, during which an undisclosed number of individuals were injured. Some reports suggest that there may have been at least one fatality, but this has not been confirmed. Security forces remain deployed in the capital and have cornered off a section of the boulevard Los Proceres.
