7.1 magnitude earthquake reported

At 0224 local time today an earthquake of 7.1 magnitude struck an area 39 miles northeast of the island of Roatan, Islas de la Bahia, Honduras. A tsunami warning was initially issued for Honduras, Guatemala and Belize but has since been withdrawn. A 4.8 aftershock occurred approximately three hours after the earthquake. Fires broke out in parts of San Pedro Sula, while the Democracy Bridge collapsed in El Progreso. Other minor damage was reported in Puerto Cortes and Santa Barbara, Honduras, and in the town of Independence in Belize. There have been reports of power and communications outages throughout Honduras, including in San Pedro Sula and on Roatan. There have been no immediate reports of disruptions at Honduran airports. Details about the full extent of the damage throughout the region are likely to emerge in the coming days currently 4 people have been reported as being killed.Officials expected the death toll to rise as reports came in from the mountainous area around the coast.
