School building collapsed
11 Nov 2008
The La Promesse school building collapsed in the Petionville suburb of Port-au-Prince at approximately 1000 local time on 7 November 2008. The collapse injured at least 150 people and killed at least 92 more. On 9 November 2008 approximately 100 people who were angry over the slow speed of the rescue and recovery process stormed the disaster area. Haitian police officers and U.N. peacekeepers were eventually able to remove the protesters from the area. A construction project at the school was underway at the time of the incident; authorities are investigating whether the project caused the collapse.
