Political and economic situation remains precarious

On 25 August 2008 several hundred protesters held a brief demonstration against rising food prices in the La Savane slum of Les Cayes, which is located approximately 118 mi/190 km south of Port-au-Prince. Protesters erected barricades consisting of burning tires. U.N. peacekeepers and Haitian police officers fired tear gas to disperse the protesters.
