Georgetown airport to close at 18:00 until air traffic controllers dispute resolved

03 Feb 2009
The chief of Guyanese civil aviation announced on the 2nd February that Georgetown's Cheddi Jagan International Airport (SYCJ/GEO) has banned flights occurring after 1800 local time due to an ongoing air controllers' strike. Aviation officials stated that the airport must close at this time to accommodate senior officials who have taken over the task of controlling air traffic until the issue is resolved. The strike began on 30 January after the government refused the controllers' demands for wage increases.
