TRAVEL TO CONAKRY SHOULD BE AVOID DUE TO CURRENT SECURITY CONDITIONS

29 Sep 2009
Security conditions in Conakry, the capital, remain tenuous on 29 September 2009 following demonstrations and rioting that occurred throughout the city the previous day. Military and police personnel are heavily deployed in the city, and there have been reports of security personnel discharging weapons in the air during their patrols. Security forces have erected many roadblocks in and around Conakry. Day to day operations in the city are severely limited, with only a few people and cars visible in the streets. Local sources indicated that the clashes on 28 September left more than 150 people dead and approximately 1,250 others injured. International groups and foreign nations have condemned the crackdown on protesters and have called for the release of several prominent opposition figures who were detained during the incidents. The international community has also threatened sanctions against the junta for pursuing authoritarian policies.
