Strike by government health care workers halted most medical services for a second day
10 Sep 2008
A strike by government health care workers over a wage dispute halted most medical services for a second day on 9 September 2008 in Conakry, the Guinean capital. Health care workers have been demanding 18 months worth of back pay as well as an increase in wages and advancement possibilities. Local sources stated that most hospitals are not even providing minimal emergency services due to the strike. The Donka University Hospital, located in the suburbs of Conakry, was closed due to the labor action, as was the capital's Ignace Deen University Hospital. Union leaders have stated that the strike will continue until health care workers' demands are met.
