Ongoing protests in the capital city of Conakry have shut down trains transporting alumina

05 Nov 2008
Local sources reported on 5 November 2008 that ongoing protests in the capital city of Conakry have shut down trains transporting alumina (one of Guinea's main exports) due to blocked rails and roads in the outlyinging suburbs of the city. Protests against the high cost of fuel in the country have continued to occur sporadically in the Enco 5 district. Violent protests on 3 November left two people dead as security forces clashed with demonstrators in several neighborhoods in the city. The government outlawed public gatherings on 2 November in an effort to contain the violence but gatherings have continued throughout the last 48 hours.
