Junta's increasingly authoritarian and erratic behaviorfuels security and stability concerns

24 Apr 2009
Junta officials arrested several military officials and soldiers in the capital city of Conakry on 24 April 2009. At least two captains were taken into custody along with an undisclosed number of soldiers who were loyal to them. Officials did not indicate the exact reason for the detentions. The arrests followed junta leader Moussa Dadis Camara's last-minute cancellation of a trip to Libya and the deployment of the Guinean military throughout Conakry on 23 April. Junta officials had indicated that the move came after increased evidence of disgruntled military personnel possibly plotting against Camara. Sources indicated that military barricades were set up at the city's main bridge as well as outside state-run radio and television buildings. Military personnel were also stationed around a major military base in the city. Soldiers reportedly searched cars at checkpoints, and many locals limited their activities in the city throughout the day.
