Banking sector strike threatens fuel supplies and transportation operations

26 Apr 2010
Government officials warned on 23 April 2010 that an ongoing banking sector strike threatens fuel supplies and transportation operations in the country. Banking sector employees have been engaged in the work stoppage for approximately one week over a wage dispute. Officials stated that in the long term the lack of access to finances could force business and fuel station closures and that the strike could also affect the nation’s vital mining industry. Media sources reported long lines at fuel stations on 23 April in response to the government announcement as residents, fearing fuel shortages, attempted to ensure personal supplies. Officials of mining companies stated that fuel stockpiles are adequate for the time being and that operations are not currently threatened.
