Bank and insurance company employees launch nationwide strike

Bank and insurance company employees in Guinea launched a nationwide strike on 1 December 2008 over a wage dispute. Employees have been demanding increased salaries and better medical and retirement benefits. Sources stated that bank services have been disrupted and long lines have formed at various banking establishments. Union officials and company personnel had been in talks to resolve the issue but talks broke down prior to the beginning of the strike.
