UNREST DURING ELECTIONS REMAINS A CONCERN

The second round of the presidential election will be held in Guinea Bissau on 26 July 2009. The polls follow a peaceful first round, which resulted in the current run-off between the ruling African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) candidate, Malam Bacai Sanha, and opposition leader and former President Kumba Yala. Sanha, who received 40 percent of the previous round votes, is expected to garner the majority in this second round.
