RUN-OFF TO BE HELD FOR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

03 Jul 2009
Electoral commission representatives indicated on 2 July 2009 that recent presidential elections must go to a run-off as the vote did not produce a clear winner. The run-off will be contested by Malam Bacai Sanha of the ruling African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), who won 39.6 percent of the vote and former President Koumba Yala who won 29.4 percent. A date for the run-off has not yet been specified.
