Volcanic ash cloud closes Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport
28 May 2010
On 27 May 2010 civil aviation authorities announced that an ash cloud produced by the eruption of the Pacaya volcano has forced the closure of Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport (MGGT/GUA). Officials stated that all air operations have been suspended due to problems with visibility; the shutdown will remain in effect until at least 1200 local time on 28 May. The volcanic ash also closed other airports in the country; reports indicate that only Tikal's El Peten Airport (TKM), located in the far northern region of the country, remains open. All flights bound for Guatemala are being diverted to El Salvador for the present.
The eruption of the Pacaya volcano, which is located 19 mi/30 km southwest of Guatemala City, dumped approximately 3 in/8 cm of ash over the capital's metropolitan area, especially affecting southern areas of the city. Authorities have declared a state of emergency and are advising residents to remain in their homes at present. Schools, shops and other businesses have reportedly closed in Guatemala City. Several small towns near Pacaya have been evacuated
