Granade attack on a passenger bus
13 Jul 2010
On 12 July 2010 unknown assailants launched a high-powered fragmentation grenade at a passenger bus, killing at least two passengers and gravely injuring 15 others. The bus, which belongs to La Sanjuanerita bus company, covers the route between Guatemala City and San Juan Sacatepequez, a satellite city in the western metropolitan area. Public buses are common targets for extortion gangs in the capital, which charge "safe passage" fees and often attack non-compliant drivers. Buses are also often the scene of revenge attacks between rival gangs and drug-trafficking organizations. Authorities have not yet made any arrests in the case and have not commented on a possible motive for the latest assault.
