Workers to stage one day stoppage

01 Apr 2009
Greek workers will stage a one-day nationwide strike on 2 April 2009 to protest the government's response to the global financial crisis and proposed spending cuts. Disruptions to public services and ground and air transportation are expected as a result of the work stoppage, which is timed to occur at the same time as the G-20 London Summit 2009. Olympic Airways has canceled 140 flights in anticipation of the strike, as air traffic controllers will halt work between 1200 and 1500 local time (0900 to 1200 UTC). In Athens, subway, bus and trolley services will be interrupted during the morning and evening hours, while workers on the tram and suburban railway will join the 24-hour work stoppage. Express bus services to and from Athens International Airport (LGAV/ATH) will also reportedly be disrupted as a result of the strike action.
