Strikes may disrupt public transport including ferries
19 May 2010
Greece's two main public and private sector unions plan to stage a 24-hour strike on 20 May 2010 to protest the government's economic austerity measures. The work stoppage is expected to result in the suspension of rail, bus, subway and trolley services in Athens, as well as ferries serving the Greek islands. Air traffic controllers will not join the strike, and no flights disruptions are anticipated. Traffic disruptions are likely in central Athens, where large-scale rallies are scheduled to take place; there is a potential for the protests to turn violent. Meanwhile, unions have warned of plans to stage a new strike in June in a show of continued opposition to the government's economic policies
