Public and private sector workers launched a nationwide strike

20 May 2010
Public and private sector workers launched a nationwide strike on 20 May 2010 to protest austerity measures implemented by the Greek government to combat the country's budget deficit. The work stoppage halted ferries and trains and caused significant disruptions to domestic flights. Although air traffic controllers did not participate in the strike, several small airports were closed, and some domestic carriers canceled flights. Government offices, schools and banks remained closed, and hospitals were limited to emergency services. Protesters in Athens planned two rallies in conjunction with the strike, and thousands of protesters gathered in Athens' city center. A faction of protesters occupied the Labor Ministry building; however, police officers did not interfere. A major rally was also reported in Thessaloniki.
