Private & Public Sector Unions Stage 1 Day Strike

Public and private sector unions will stage a one-day nationwide strike on 24 February 2010 to protest the government's recently announced austerity measures. The labor action is expected to cause significant disruptions to transportation and other services across the country, including airports, ferries, trains and banking. Some estimates indicate that around 3 million workers could participate in the industrial action. On 23 February a group of approximately 100 protesters affiliated with a communist labor union blockaded the stock exchange in Athens; police officers did not intervene to disperse the demonstration, which did not significantly affect trading on the stock market.
